Interview with Craig Newmark – The People Person

From teenagers to senior citizens, it seems like everyone nowadays is using Craigslist. Craig Newman describes the phenomenon that is Craigslist as a “happy accident”. While that may be true, what is no “accident” is the fact that [pqr]Craig is hands down, one of the nicest, most humble guys you will ever meet[/pqr].

He truly is, along with his site, an enigma of sorts. How can a site that is free be so successful? How can someone so successful remain so generous and down to earth? Craig’s mentality is far different than what is the norm – something we all can imitate.

Chris….wow very spirited comment. However, I think the key here is balance.

    1. Craig is not a rich man.
    2. He really wants to help others
    3. CL does provide a good free medium to help people sell things. I’ve personally sold a couple items, gave away some weights for free, found an apartment and some programming gigs.
    4. CL is based in San Fran – a city known for it’s liberal and ‘progressive’ stance.

In any community (online or off) you will find bad apples – locations, families, individuals. Garbage exists all over – but only if you look for it. Basically it provides a service for what people want. That’s it. Unfortunately people desire some unsavory things.

Don’t be blind to the bad but at the same time don’t deny the good that has come from CL. CL has adult areas but only if you go looking for them. I can understand totally if you have had a personal experience that has changed your viewpoint. However don’t be surprised if others don’t share the same sentiment or view CL as glass half full. 🙂

Craig is a wonderful person and a successful entrepreneur. His creation, the craigslist is an awesome concept which has marked the online classified segment with style. This centralized network of internet communities is a great option for individuals as well as business people to advertise their products and services with ease. Good to know about craig, all at one place.
