Interview with Craig Newmark
    - The People Person

From teenagers to senior citizens, it seems like everyone nowadays is using Craigslist. Craig Newman describes the phenomenon that is Craigslist as a “happy accident”. While that may be true, what is no “accident” is the fact that Craig is hands down, one of the nicest, most humble guys you will ever meet.

He truly is, along with his site, an enigma of sorts. How can a site that is free be so successful? How can someone so successful remain so generous and down to earth? Craig’s mentality is far different than what is the norm - something we all can imitate.

The Interview

Craig Newmark

Name: Craig Newmark
Born: December 6, 1952 (age 55) Morristown, New Jersey
Occupation: Craigslist.org

Baby Craig

No nickname, but people now kid me that I can go around with only the single name “Craig”.

Phone, pedometer, wallet, keys, the usual.

For the most part, customer service is okay, but sometimes people are pretty abusive. No interest, though, in giving up.

Craig's Workspace

In the past, taken far too long to get out of denial.

Craigslist, it has helped a lot of people.

Treat others like how you want to be treated.

  • “Brevity is the soul of wit.” - Shakespeare
  • “If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise, they’ll kill you.” -Oscar Wilde

I’m persistent, but try too hard to be funny.

Enough sleep.

Go tell Craig that his site is a cesspool for perverts, child sex solicitors. CL is a garbage site full of illegal activities being falsified as commerce.

No wonder so many teens and kids go there. Remove the adult garbage and Cl knows it will lose all that massive traffic it gets.

Newmark - You are an *******. You put profits before the well being of kids.

Justin Hernandez Identicon Icon Justin Hernandez replies:

Chris….wow very spirited comment. However, I think the key here is balance.

    1. Craig is not a rich man.
    2. He really wants to help others
    3. CL does provide a good free medium to help people sell things. I’ve personally sold a couple items, gave away some weights for free, found an apartment and some programming gigs.
    4. CL is based in San Fran - a city known for it’s liberal and ‘progressive’ stance.

In any community (online or off) you will find bad apples - locations, families, individuals. Garbage exists all over - but only if you look for it. Basically it provides a service for what people want. That’s it. Unfortunately people desire some unsavory things.

Don’t be blind to the bad but at the same time don’t deny the good that has come from CL. CL has adult areas but only if you go looking for them. I can understand totally if you have had a personal experience that has changed your viewpoint. However don’t be surprised if others don’t share the same sentiment or view CL as glass half full. :)

What good is the glass half full, if it is made of poison. Despite what you managed to sell on CL(for better or worse), it can abolish that pedophilia they are promoting for free at the expense of kids. How hard is that? Please don’t give me your crappy defensive explanation. And I am not even trying to be rude.

Do I care of Mr Newmark is respected? By whom? Certainly not by me!

We, as a society have done enough damage on our kid’s psyche by making perversion accessible all across the board.

Yeah! Don’t have college fees. Why not use CL to sell ***** for the setback?

    I am done.
