Interview with Rob Malda a.k.a CmdrTaco – Tech News OG

If you call yourself a geek (practicing, social or closet), then you must’ve read one of the many articles submitted by CmdrTaco (a.k.a. Rob Malda) to his pop news site Slashdot.org. Since 1997, it has 1) provided a steady source of tech news with a flair 2) a rich environment for geeks, nerds and dorks to engage in virtual fisticuffs 3) a place where you can always get flamed for bad haivng grammer.

Rob gives insight into what’s really his greatest achievement, the future of slashdot, why I should read RTFM (or FAQ) and what treasures lie near his workdesk. Enjoy!

Interview with Craig Newmark – The People Person

Interview with Craig Newmark – The People Person

From teenagers to senior citizens, it seems like everyone nowadays is using Craigslist. Craig Newman describes the phenomenon that is Craigslist as a “happy accident”. While that may be true, what is no “accident” is the fact that Craig is hands down, one of the nicest, most humble guys you will ever meet.

He truly is, along with his site, an enigma of sorts. How can a site that is free be so successful? How can someone so successful remain so generous and down to earth? Craig’s mentality is far different than what is the norm – something we all can imitate.

Why?

Why Tivate? Simple, because everyone needs inspiration. Now I know what you’re thinking, “I’ve already heard those ‘mouse that churned butter stories’ and I’ve seen the pics of the frog choking the stork what else do I need.” Well, to answer that, all of us need people. We need the human element. We need to stories from people who have ‘been there’ and ‘done that’ and came out the other side successful. We need to hear from those and see how opposition has molded their life. And though we live in a society that worships perfection, the fact of the matter is that we all make mistakes – from minor ones to major bone-headed ones. But, it’s not how or how hard we fall, what matters is how we get up again. Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone.

Why? Isn't that always the question? Read more....

Jean-Francois Champollion – The Visual Linguist

Jean-Francois Champollion was known as the father of Egyptology for his deciphering of Egyptian Hieroglyphics using the Rosetta Stone as a language key. It took him three years. His research helped explain that the language of the Egyptians were both phonetic and ideographic signs.

He showed a keen interest in linguistics while very young. At 16 years of age, he had mastery over twelve different languages – one of which was Coptic, which later helped him interpret the Rosetta stone.

Helen Keller – The Visionary

Helen Keller – The Visionary

Helen Keller showed the world that despite being handicapped she was more than capable of living a life full of success. Born on June 27, 1880, Helen lived a privileged life. Her father, Arthur Keller, had previously been an officer in the Confederate army, and her mother, Kate Adams, was a relative of Robert E. Lee. Though deaf and blind, she became a great American author and lecturer. She was an inspiration to many, handicapped and able-bodied alike. She once said, “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” Helen showed this kind of mentality throughout her life.
