Don’t you just want to wring their necks? The office secretary who does ten things at once, the reckless teenager, the guy who tails everyone because he has a huge car or the rich guy who thinks he owns the road because his car is the nicest. We’ve all seen them. Unfortunately, we can’t change the way they drive but we can help keep the roadways safer by paying attention to our own driving skills. Instead of wagging our fingers, it would help us to remember and practice safe and courteous driving. Here are some tips. Practice some of them today.

• Don’t tailgate! If you can read all the words on license plate registration sticker – you’re way to close.
• Give people a break
• Pay attention. Avoid as much as possible the following distractions: 1) Eating and drinking 2) Loud music 3) Clowning around in the car 4) Kids without seatbelts on 5) Talking on a cellphone without a hands-free device
• Follow the posted speed limit. Don’t go too slow or excessively fast.
• Know where you are going.
• Use your turn signals. Signal early and as much as possible, it’s a good habit.
• Your horn is a last resort – not the first.
• Avoid cutting people off.
• When someone gives you a break thank them (the shaka thanks is popular in Hawaii).
• If someone flips you off or swears at you – LET IT GO! Just let it go. It’s not worth it – seriously! You’ll thank me later.
• Remember that you are not the only person on the road.
