If you’re reading this blog you must already have a measure of intelligence – haha . But all joking aside, we take comfort that we are smart to a certain degree. Whether it be math, history, mechanics, video games, etc. However, do you consider yourself a genius? Do you know what a True Genius is?

From a social standpoint there are three flavors of genius, regardless of educational focus. They are:

Negative Genius

Average Genius

True Genius

Let’s take a more in depth look into these three types.

What is a Negative Genius?::

Intelligence: Above Average <—-> Genius
Personality type: Rude, cocky, socially inept, focuses on self rather than others
Strengths: Knowledgeable, leader, self-motivated, constantly learning, trivia buff
Weaknesses: Does not work well in a team environment, loves to see others fail, uses knowledge as a weapon, does not know how to compliment, views other intelligent people as threats

The Negative Genius relies heavily on making others feel stupid and inferior with their distorted view of intelligence. Instead of using knowledge to empower others, they wield it as a heavy club bashing and pummeling others mentally. If not an actual genius, they are able to masquerade as one due to being so obnoxious, cocky and rude that others are afraid to challenge them. Sadly, the Negative Genius is the most common type of genius and has no clue how destructive they really are.

In the work environment, the Negative Genius excels at putting other people down and lowering morale. Since they look good next to everyone else, they are usually made into managers and bosses. The Negative Genius will try to make his employees conform to his narrow viewpoint. As a result creativity will wane out of fear of being chastised. Teamwork will also decline as other employees will want to “get ahead” and start imitating the Negative Genius. This toxic environment will breed stress, competition and selfish egos.

You can find the Negative Genius at your work place putting others down, in your circle of friends – the one who thinks you should be more like them, or working at the local Geek Squad talking about things that no one really cares about.

What is an Average Genius?::

Intelligence: Genius
Personality type: Quiet, keeps to themselves, focuses most of their attention on work and education
Strengths: Very intelligent, hard-worker, non-destructive, team player
Weaknesses: Does not share information readily, relies on their work do to the talking rather than themselves, uncomfortable taking the lead and rather just follow

The Average Genius is a neutral type of individual; not a negative nor a positive influence. They are vastly more intelligent than the Negative Genius because they have to rely on their work to speak for them. The Average Genius will share their knowledge with others only after much goading. This is not due to cockiness, rather, the Average Genius is fearful of making mistakes. It is this fear that prevents them from sharing their knowledge freely with others. They reject themselves before allowing others the chance to reject them.

You can find the Average Genius keeping to himself with their nose in a book, trembling over the thought of making mistakes and avoiding the need to express their opinion. The Average Genius makes an excellent friend and workmate who will share what they know if you can earn their trust.

What Defines a True Genius?::

Intelligence: Average <—-> Genius
Personality type: Warm, gregarious, social, open, kind, caring, helpful, optimistic
Strengths: Shares their knowledge freely, socially adept, personable, unique, able to makes friends quickly, increases the intelligence of others around them, constructive criticizer, not afraid to make mistakes or be wrong
Weaknesses: Not always appreciated, regularly taken advantage of, may not appreciate that they are a True Genius, hated

Now, what – yes what does it mean to be a True Genius? It is someone who shares their knowledge freely with the goal of helping others without expecting anything back in return. Amazingly, you don’t have to be very intelligent to be a True Genius. You just have to love helping others and be willing to share the knowledge you have.

You can find the True Genius taking the lead at unique and successful companies where teamwork flows freely, making a positive change in peoples lives, on the internet touted as the greatest (put occupation here) guru and lastly in yourself. Hey, don’t worry! Being a True Genius is easier than you think. Let’s find out how.

How to be a True Genius::

Allow me to first tell a story about a computer guy we’ll call Chris, whom I met while working at my previous job. He was brilliant with computers and intelligent with everything else. He was a genius. However socially he was a zero. Rude, obnoxious and very cocky. He once told me that he ran Linux on some old Apples he had back at home. I asked if he ran Yellow Dog Linux, a company which is known for being a major Linux + Apple vendor. He mocked and accused me of making things up so I could appear intelligent. He said something like, “What’s next? Pink Lizard Linux.” Two other co-workers followed suit since Chris was the Alpha Genius for the day.

Now, do you realize what just happened here? Mr. Genius Chris automatically assumes that because HE never heard of something that it’s gotta be made up – it’s false. Further, he successfully lowered the intelligence of the other two co-workers because they automatically assumed that what I stated was incorrect. Chris is and will always be immensely more intelligent than I. However when it comes to being a True Genius he is a fool. Let’s look at the first step to becoming a True Genius.

1. Share knowledge::

A True Genius is never afraid to share. Nothing is more personal or heart felt than sharing what you’ve learned. I love how Zen Masta Leo Babauta says, “this is what has worked for me” and then he gives his advice. He’s happy to share but realizes that what he says won’t work for everyone. Feel like you’re not a “success” yet? Don’t sweat it. You can still help by letting others know what hasn’t worked.

When debating on whether to share what you know with others, consider the 90/10 principle. Who do you consider more helpful a 90% genius who shares 10% of what he knows? Or a 10% genius who shares 90%? The answer is obvious. Think about all the gurus you look up to – don’t they share their thoughts and ideas freely? Don’t you feel special when they express their opinions? If you want be a True Genius and desire to be regarded as a “source” of valuable information, you have to share. You have to desire to want help others more than anything else. There’s no way around it.

If you share what you know, it will raise the intelligence of everyone that listens. Less mistakes will be made you will become an asset. Others will seek your advice and as an added bonus people will want to share information with you. Everybody wins! Knowledge is a tool to uplift others. Don’t use it as a weapon to humilate and destroy! Think about people who are obnoxious and rude, do you want to help them? Exactly! So learn to share.

In Conclusion::

We’ve covered the first step to becoming a True Genius. You may ask yourself who’s this guy? Is he a True Genius? Honestly no – not yet. I still have lots more to share. That’s why in the upcoming weeks we’ll be taking a deeper look at how to be a True Genius.

Photo courtesy of miraculousbeads1@verizo n.net

The geek in me has decided to write a five part series entitled “Under the Hood” in which I take a look at the different parts that run Tivate.com. I just to hope to inspire anyone who’s thinking about running their own website and let them know what steps (or misteps) I’ve taken. Here are the topics for the 5 part series:

Server hardware

Server software

WordPress setup / plugins / hacks

Desktop software

Web & misc. resources

Okay so let’s get right into the first topic.

Server Hardware::

Here’s the specs for the server from Slicehost:

Full root access and rebooting

Choice of Linux distro

Dedicated IP address and Tier-1 redundant bandwidth

RAID-10 disk storage

Reserved RAM

Guaranteed CPU share and more when available

4-core servers running Xen virtualization instances

Slicehost management portal for reboots and software installs

Mobile management portal for smartphones

Ajax console access

Bootable rescue mode

Machines running with fixed usage limits, below full capacity

Now if that’s not a plug then I don’t know what is! Haha. Okay what does all that stuff mean? In short, you get a damn good setup for $19.95. Admittedly, it takes some effort to get your slice up and running. But they have a great community and I went from a novice to regular server guy in no time. Why did I choose slicehost? Here are my reasons:

Fast friendly tech support – Before I signed up I fired off an email just to ask a dumb question. It was just to test how fast they could respond to my email. I got a response with a polite answer to my question 15 minutes later. Though I’ve only emailed them 5 times or so, it’s nice and comforting to know that they are there. Lastly, Jason and Matt have expanded it seems like they’ve cloned themselves because the rest of the team is just as knowledgeable and friendly.

Price – $20 is a damn good price for a VPS slice with 256 RAM, 10GB storage and 100GB bandwidth. I know there are “other” companies that keep it competitive but Slicehost is different – which leads me to my next point.

Community – I ran into some pretty tough spots but thanks to the community articles and forum posts I was able to pull through. Some notables in the community are PickledOnion, SuperJared and Scotty. I always laugh when I think about a problem that Scotty helped me out with. Man tough times indeed. I have never felt ashamed to ask any question and I’ve never seen anyone bashed for asking one. The forum is a really great place for n00bs and experts alike to mingle and share info. Some high profile sites running on Slicehost are Zen Habits, compfight and SugarStats.

Education – The education I have received has been invaluable. Setting up your own slice is like a geek’s way of hot rodding. It takes a lot of time and effort to build but it’s a beautiful thing to see your site rolling down the information super highway (HAHA I’m a nerd!). I can take heart that if I ever have to build a server from scratch again, I know I can do it.

Design – They have redesigned their site with a nice clean layout and appealing colors. That’s at least worth a nod right? They also have a great control panel where you can upgrade / downgrade a slice, perform maintenance, view stats or setup a DNS record.

Well there are my reasons. Thanks for reading and I hope to see you soon on Slicehost (signup)!

Whew, man what a week. Learned so much about blogging and interviewing people. Just a quick summation of things I learned.

That people (even famous ones) are genuinely nice people

That everyone makes mistakes (just wait till the cons)

Have to be positive

Failure is ok

Everybody is human

Brevity is wisdom, keep it concise (when speaking to others) – thanks Craig!

Everybody especially well known people are busy

Blogging is hard

Don’t blast people with 50+ interview questions

I have to be more personable

Here are the things I have learned from the different interviews:

Craig Newmark – Treat everyone the way you want to be treated.

Rob Malda – The greatest achievements have to do with the people in our lives

Walter Lewin – When doing something we love we give it our best effort

Jimmy Wales – Failure is a stepping stone to success, not a barrier

To add to this list, I wanted to put into words the mistakes I’ve made thus far. Originally I had this brilliant idea that I ask people 50+ questions and tell them “[pqr]don’t worry, just pick and choose the questions you want to answer[/pqr].” In the end my idea was brilliantly unrealistic. They’re too busy. It’s like asking them to do my homework and then turn it in for me.

Since then I whittled my questions down to 10 or so. Still very good questions which give us insight into their mentality and optimism. Honestly, looking back I’m like what the fudge was I thinking?!!! Haha! Well, like I stated earlier, mistakes are to be expected – especially when you’re learning.

Interestingly this morning while getting breakfast at a local restaurant (portuguese sausage, eggs and fried rice from loco moco) I saw an older guy with a football shirt that had an interesting statment. It read “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard”. That’s so true. [pq]What I lack in skill I’ll definitely make up in determination and desire[/pq].

One of the interviewees stated that my interview request wasn’t personal enough and that while I did not offend him, I might have offended others. I bypassed being personal for the sake of being concise and to the point. I realize that most rejected due to the fact that I really am a nobody – for now. So far I have been rejected serveral times. If I were contacting them in behalf of TIME magazine or Wired it would be a different story. I’m not discouraged by this reality but realize that I have to start somewhere. If it were so easy, everyone would be doing it. Soon – very soon, these circumstances will change. Until next week!

Photo courtesy of Aiko Heiwa

Many of you may wonder how in the world did I get an interview with (insert name here)? To be honest I just asked. I just tell them honestly how I feel. I feel that interviews today are a little flawed. They focus too much on what a person is doing and not enough on WHO that person really is. Who are they? What’s has been their greatest failure? What inspires them? How have they handled negativity? Like a potter who shapes clay, in a small way I want to give shape to these ones by asking them who they really are and sharing that with you.

While each individuals idea of success my be different, I believe that they share a common mentality. Now, why ask basically the same question to so many people? Why not mix it up? Simple. We’re all human. “[pqr]If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die?[/pqr]” – (Act III, Scene I) The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare. And that is so true! We so quickly forget that these leaders are human! In our minds they somehow transcend logic and reality and become “perfect”. Once they have become perfect in our eyes we have failed them as inspirations due to the fact that perfection is something unattainable – it’s impossible to reach.

You will find that each interview is like a polished diamond – unique in color, clarity and cut but nonetheless still a gem to read. And no, I don’t wish to bring out negativity or focus only on their mistakes. Rather, I want to show that it’s human to fail, to make mistakes and that it’s ok. It’s ok. Trust me it’s ok. You don’t have to be perfect. It’s ok to be human. They are all successes not because they learned not how to succeed at being perfect, but rather, how to succeed at failing.

Why Tivate? Simple, because everyone needs inspiration. Now I know what you’re thinking, “I’ve already heard those ‘mouse that churned butter stories’ and I’ve seen the pics of the frog choking the stork what else do I need.” Well, to answer that, all of us need people. We need the human element. We need to stories from people who have ‘been there’ and ‘done that’ and came out the other side successful. We need to hear from those and see how opposition has molded their life. And though we live in a society that worships perfection, the fact of the matter is that we all make mistakes – from minor ones to major bone-headed ones. But, it’s not how or how hard we fall, what matters is how we get up again. Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone.

Photo courtesy of oledoe

What made start thinking about making an inspirational site was Scott Barron’s excerpt on the Ruby on Rails Core Team page (archived ’05) which said Scott “was set to swear off computers forever and become a plumber when Rails was released”. I was recently feeling bummed over a botched software project and was wondering if I should change direction and stop coding all together. Reading about Mr. Barron inspired me and I thought if he felt like giving up and didn’t – and now he’s on the RoR core team, maybe I should persevere. I was sure that there were others in my situation. Those who needed to be inspired and fight through discouragement and obstacles.

But what is inspiration? What inspires us? What creates success? Dogged determination? Sheer luck? Natural talent? What is success? Is it measured by money? or happiness? Is there a recipe? How can I be successful? Tivate seeks to accomplish this by interviewing people who we deem successful and see what makes them unique – who they are, what do they like, their philosophies, their struggles. We appreciate candor more than perfection. We also write articles on a series of topics ranging from social mentality to thinking differently. In this pursuit we have been inspired and we hope that you will too.

Mr. Richard Stallman pretty much sums up how I feel about this blog with the following quote: “[pqr]I consider that the golden rule requires that if I like a program I must share it with other people who like it.[/pqr]” I’ve followed the lead of famous blogger Leo Babauta and decided to release all content on this blog with no copyright. I do though, have some additional thoughts to add:

While you are free to copy the interviews, I politely request that you respect the interviewee and keep their ideas intact and copy there words verbatim. I am only allowed to release the copyright on my own words and articles.

I’ve seen how much stress it has been for other bloggers to protect their content and decided that I want no part of it. I’d rather focus on creating content than busy myself keeping it under lock and key.

Knowledge is free. My sincerest desire is that people find their inspiration. Whether they find it on this site or somewhere else, as long as I have helped contribute to that I’m happy.

Imitation is the greatest form of flattery.

Since I can’t word it any better I’ve blatantly ripped Leo’s uncopyright page, only changing the references to the book he wrote. I think it’s iro…..funny (haha, you thought I was gonna say ironic and then send a million grammar monkeys after me) how that out of all the free content on his site, I ripped only his copyright. Thanks Leo

An edited exceprt from http://zenhabits.net/2008/01/open-source-blogging-feel-free-to-steal-my-content/:

I release my copyright on this content.

There is no need to email me for permission. Use it however you want! Email it, share it, reprint it with or without credit. Change it around, put in a bunch of swear words and attribute them to me. It’s OK.

Credit::While you are under no obligation to do so, I would appreciate it if you give me credit for any work of mine that you use, and ideally, link back to the original.

Why I’m releasing copyright::I’m not a big fan of copyright laws anyway, especially as they’re being applied these days by corporations, used to crack down on the little guys so they can continue their large profits.

Copyrights are often touted as protecting the artist, but in most cases the artist gets very little while the corporations make most of the money. I’m trying this experiment to see whether releasing copyright really hurts the creator of the content.

I think, in most cases, the protectionism that is touted by “anti-piracy” campaigns and lawsuits and lobbying actually hurts the artist. Limiting distribution to protect profits isn’t a good thing.

The lack of copyright, and blatant copying by other artists and even businesses, never hurt Leonardo da Vinci when it comes to images such as the Mona Lisa, the Last Supper, or the Vitruvian Man. It’s never hurt Shakespeare. I doubt that it’s ever really hurt any artist (although I might just be ignorant here).

And while I’m no da Vinci or Shakespeare, I can’t help but wonder whether copyright hurts me or helps me. If someone feels like sharing my content on their blog, or in any other form for that matter, that seems like a good thing for me. If someone wanted to share my ebook with 100 friends, I don’t see how that hurts me. My work is being spread to many more people than I could do myself. That’s a plus, as I see it.

And if someone wants to take my work and improve upon it, as artists have been doing for centuries, I think that’s a wonderful thing. If they can take my favorite posts and make something funny or inspiring or thought-provoking or even sad … I say more power to them. The creative community only benefits from derivations and inspirations.

This isn’t a new concept, of course, and I’m freely ripping ideas off here. Which is kinda the point.

Counter arguments and all that::There are a number of objects that will likely be brought up to this idea, and while I can’t possibly answer all of them, here are a few of my responses in anticipation:

Google rank will go down. My understanding is that Google penalizes pages that have exact duplicates on other sites, when it comes to PageRank. I don’t know how much of a penalty that is. If people duplicate my content (which they already are, even without permission), it’s possible that my PageRank will drop and people will have a harder time finding my content on Google search. If that’s the case, I accept that penalty. I’ve never been one to go for SEO techniques anyway, so this is nothing new to me.

Who knows what people will do with your work? Someone could take my work, turn it into a piece of … baloney … and put my name on it. They could translate it with all kinds of errors. They could … well, they could do just about anything. But that kind of thinking stems from a mind that wants to control content … while I am of the opinion that you can’t control it, and even if you can, it’s not a good thing. What if someone takes my work and turns it into something brilliant, and becomes the next James Joyce? Or more likely, what if they take the work and extend the concepts and make it even more useful, to even more people? Release control, and see what happens. People are wonderful, creative creatures. Let’s see what they can do.

You’re making other bloggers look bad. Perhaps, if you want to see things in a negative light. But I’m not doing this as a challenge to other bloggers, or as a comment on their policies. I’m doing it simply to stay in line with my values. And who knows? Maybe others will be inspired by this in some way. Or maybe they won’t. Either way, please don’t judge others based on what I do.

What about when you write that print book you’re always talking about? When I get published by a major publisher, I probably won’t be able to release copyright. I accept that as a cost of getting published in print, which is a dream of mine. If I contradict myself, very well … I contradict myself. [Edit: I should have attributed this before, but the last sentence is a paraphrase of Whitman.]

What if someone publishes a book with all your content and makes a million dollars off it? I hope they at least give me credit. And my deepest desire is that they give some of that money to a good cause.

But … but … they’re stealing from you! You can’t steal what is given freely. I call this sharing, not piracy.

Hello, my name is Justin Hernandez (interview) and I’m a 25 year-old dreamer living in Kapolei on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. I love people. I started this site out of the sincere belief that everyone needs to be inspired. What has motivated me to do this site was failure. In a 2 year span I, 1) Got into 2 accidents (minor ones, the day I got laid off and the day my ex-girlfriend went back to the mainland – sheesh) 2) Laid off of my job and 3) Broke up with my girlfriend and we called off the wedding. These failures (and other minor ones) led me to create Tivate.com. I want to know what makes people successful. Tivate is born not of genius, expertise or my being perfect but rather out of sadness and my desire to find out how to change that and help others in the process. Here’s more on how I feel:

Daily we are bombarded with so many negative things – I mean just watch the news. The war in Iraq (I know I’m going to date myself with this list), Tibet, dumb celebrities, abusive cops, Jack Thompson, murders, recession, crime – the list goes on and on. It’s depressing. Instead of focusing on these negative issues, Tivate.com aims to be different. [pqr]We want to offer something positive. Tivate is a breath of fresh air.[/pqr]

My philosophy is a three step process of “cultivate, motivate, activate” – get tivated (explanation here)! We aim to get you tivated through interviews, articles, analysis of historical figures, pictures and quotes. While you may not share the same sentiments expressed in our posts, you leave thinking and seeing life from a different perspective.
